Good Friday

Western Christians refer to this day of Lent as Good Friday. The Eastern Orthodox Christians refer to the day as Holy Friday.
It remains The Day of our Saviour's Passion. [from Lyric Poems (1687)]

Art

Arts of the United States, a database of over 4000 images of works important to the study of the history of art in the United States, has been added to the GALILEO demo system and is available for your preview.

Arts of the United States, a joint project between the Lamar Dodd Art School, University of Georgia and the University of Georgia and Yale University Libraries, contains over 4,000 images of works important to the study of the history of art in the United States.

The pieces, dating from the 17th century through the 20th, include architecture, decorative arts, painting, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, and stage and costume design as well as Native American art and artifacts.

Although the majority of artists represented in the database are American, significant works created by non-native artists while in the United States are included.

The database is derived from the Carnegie Arts of the United States photographic collection, which had its genesis four decades ago in the Carnegie Study of the Arts of the United States.

The study began in 1956 as a multi-year project directed by Lamar Dodd, chairman of the University of Georgia’s Department of Art, and was funded by grant from the (then) Carnegie Corporation.

The study’s objective was to create a collection of images that would support the teaching of American art.

And the difference is?

Yesterday in my search for "poets" - Literature Online had 9073 hits and Literature Online Reference Edition had 20182 hits - what's the difference?

Literature Online Reference Edition is a fully searchable, ever-growing collection of literature resources, ranging from author biographies, student guides and dictionaries of literary terms to specialist research materials such as current full-text journals and bibliographic citations.

Literature Online, a fully searchable library of more than 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama and prose, 196 full-text literature journals, and other key criticism and reference resources.

Ah-

If I'm looking for the poem then I should use LION.
If I'm looking for information about the poet then I should start with Literature Online Reference Edition.

The links take you directly to LION and Literature Online Reference Edition - going right through GALILEO - you'll still need the current password from your Georgia librarian to access these resources.

The birds are a twitter

The early morning Spring sounds with the birds twittering away create a sense of peacfullness.

Will the new tech-y tool (less than 1 year old) create the same sense of peace?

Read about Twitter in Business Week Online, Twitter: All Trivia, All The Time and in Newsweek, Twitter: Is Brevity The Next Big Thing?

I'm a poet and

my feet show it....
they're Longfellows

Yes, it's an old joke but I couldn't resist when the topic is poets.

I used the term poets and did a Quick Search in GALILEO limiting my search to the Arts and Humanities -

Hits.......... Database
1............... Oxford English Dictionary, Second Edition
14903.......Academic Search Premier
1282..........Religion & Philosophy Collection
10995.......MasterFILE Premier
500 ..........Grove Art Online
25............ New Georgia Encyclopedia
1 ..............NoveList
9073 .....LION
42791......Research Library
20182....Literature Online Reference Edition

I expected the numbers in LION and the Literature Online Reference Edition but look at the Religion & Philosophy collection. Interesting assortment of results.

Little cat feet

The rains came
yesterday
the fog slipt in
this morning

Reminded me

Encyclopedia Britannica publishes a monthly newsletter- the March newsletter focused on ....yes, poetry. Check out the videos (notice the MLA and APA citations for the videos).

They were planning ahead!

Spring cleaning

The rain cleared a bit of the pollen from the air. That washing reminded me of Spring Cleaning.

The PLANET team from North Metro Technical College participated in the 31st Annual PLANET Student Career Days at Michigan State University over the last few days. The team finished 6th among 55 colleges and universities. Once again ranking as the number one two year school!
The team also won the “cheering competition” at the opening ceremonies and won $1000 from the Ariens Company.
The 24 events are listed with student participation.
