Triskaidekaphobia

Yes, it's Friday the 13th. Are you superstitous? Are you afraid of the number 13? You may suffer from triskaidekaphobia.

May 13, 2005 is the only Friday the 13th in 2005.

According to Chase's Calendar of Events, there can be no more than three Friday the 13ths in one calendar year.

Searching for good information

Check out the PewInternet study, _Search Engine Users: Internet searchers are confident, satisfied and trusting – but they are also unaware and naïve._ http://www.pewinternet.org/pdfs/PIP_Searchengine_users.pdf

The statistics are pretty amazing- 62% of search engine users are not aware of the difference between a site used for advertising and a site used for non-commercial information. "While most consumers could easily identify the difference between TV’s regular programming and its infomercials, or newspapers’ or magazines’ reported stories and their advertorials, only a little more than a third of search engine users are aware of the analogous sets of content commonly presented by search engines, the paid or sponsored results and the unpaid or “organic” results. Overall, only about 1 in 6 searchers saythey can consistently distinguish between paid and unpaid results." (p. 3)

Where can you go for authoritative information- you guessed it- GALILEO.

There are web sites that have been added to GALILEO specifically for NMTC students. These sites support the programs at NMTC.

There is also a database of web sites - SKS Web Select. You get to that database by going to:
Databases A - Z
---select S in the Jump to line
-----select SKS Web Select

Of course, you get the password for home use of GALILEO from.......the librarian!

Salvador Dali would be 99

May 11 2005, Marietta Daily Journal (pg A-2), Today in History, "1904- Surrealist artist Salvador Dali was born in Figueras, Spain" Salvador Dali died in 1989 (Grove Art Online).

You can find out more about Salvador Dali in several places - like the Encyclopedia Britannica- but today I'd suggest you look in Grove Art Online.

Grove Art Online now provides access to all of the articles from The Oxford Companion to Western Art (ed. Hugh Brigstocke, 2001). The Oxford Companion to Western Art (OCWA) is one of the best reference resources for western art offering over 2800 entries on major subjects in the visual arts covering major museums, artists, styles, periods, techniques, materials, and more.

These resources can be found in GALILEO http://www.galileo.usg.edu (ask the circulation librarian for the password to use GALILEO at home).

How to Find Grove Art Online in GALILEO
Open up GALIELO
----select the second tab - Arts and Humanities
-------scroll down to Grove Art Online
----------at the search box type in Salvador (you'll get 12 entries but only two are for Salvador Dali)
-------------There is an image connection in Grove Art Online where you can pull up the pictures by the artist

Weeding

It seems like Spring has been a long time a coming to Acworth. The cool weather has slowed down the planting of tender flowers and vegetables. Warm weather is just around the corner.

If you're interested in preparing your garden, we have shelves of horticulture books that might inspire you. One title is:

Backyard Composting (S 661 B33)
Your complete guide to recycling yard clippings

"Composting at home reduces your personal volume of trash, conserves water, increases plant growth, replaces the need for harsh chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and it is also fun."

Mother's Day

Mother's Day is an opportunity to thank your Mom for being, well, your Mom.

Check out GALILEO and the Baldy cartoons. Mr. Baldowski doesn't specifically address Mother's Day but he does use mothers in his cartoons!

Baldy Editorial Cartoons, 1946-1982, 1997: The Clifford H. Baldowski Collection at the Richard B. Russell Library contains 6,740 pen and ink drawings and 2,460 velox. The digital database opens with approximately 2,500 cartoons from the collection. Clifford H. Baldowski, known by the pen-name "Baldy," depicted the local, national, and international news of his day in the editorial pages of the Augusta Chronicle, Miami Herald, and Atlanta Constitution. His work is a rich source for those studying political reorganization in Georgia and the growth of Atlanta as well as the Civil Rights Movement, the Cold War, the Vietnam conflict, Middle East tensions, and Watergate.

Ask the circulation librarian for the password for this quarter.
