Triskaidekaphobia

The literal meaning for triskaidekaphobia is 'superstition about the number thirteen', but it is also used by extension to describe 'fear of Friday the 13th'.

You can read more about triskaidekaphobia in the Oxford English Dictionary (in GALILEO ).

Easy searching

There is a resource in GALILEO noted for Middle School and High School students called Student Research Center (by EbscoHost)- #162 in the NMTC list. The magazines that are indexed are not what I would limit to Middle School and High School (Economist, US News & World Report, New Republic, Newsweek to name a few).

This particular database is "prettier" than the straight EbscoHost and feels friendlier. If you're looking for current events and history this might be the database to use. Advanced search offers you several ways to focus your search-including by reading level.

Winter chills

It's warm, it's cold, it's sunny, it's cloudy...the weather is so peculiar. You're cooped up with all sorts of folks, can't open the windows to clear out the air. Germs, flu bugs, colds.....now you're sick. How do you feel better?

There are several medical resources on GALILEO.

Alt Health Watch (part of EbscoHost) "focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. This database provides full text for articles from more than 180 international and often peer-reviewed journals, reports and proceedings, as well as association and consumer newsletters. In addition, Alt HealthWatch includes hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, special reports, original research and book excerpts...The majority of the full text titles included in the database are available in native (searchable) PDF, or scanned-in-color. Do you remember?

Did you browse through old family pictures over the holiday? Sharing stories, laughing, crying, remembering what was? Remembering. Pictures help us remember.

Vanishing Georgia (#170 on the NMTC list in GALILEO) "comprises nearly 18,000 photographs. Ranging from daguerreotypes to Kodachrome prints, the images span over 100 years of Georgia history. The broad subject matter of these photographs, shot by both amateurs and professionals, includes, but is not limited to, family and business life, street scenes and architecture, agriculture, school and civic activities, important individuals and events in Georgia history, and landscapes."

It begins!

Today is the first day of the Winter Quarter for NMTC. Students are buying books, looking for classrooms, and checking with friends!

The password for NMTC access to GALILEO has changed - check with the librarian (or your instructor) for the new password.

Over the break we added additional web sites and databases for programs. We have 48 specific links for NMTC programs. At the request of an instructor, I'll add another link today. The NMTC links are identified with our logo to the right of the title.
