9 09 09

Today is September 9th, 2009 or 9 09 09. This will be the last date with repeating numbers in single digits until the first day of 2101.

Today is also the day that the entire catalog of songs by the Beatles will be released in a remastered format.

Also note that nine is a powerful number. Multiply any whole number by 9. Add the numbers in the product, and you will get 9 (or 9's) as your total. Example 9 x 345=3105. 3 + 1 +0 + 5=9.

The radio station Dave FM in Atlanta played songs related to the number 9 as part of the Radio Free Lunch show. Check out the playlist here.

And somewhere out there, kids are being born with the birthday 9 09 09 . . .

A year on the lawn

The title (and cover art) intrigued me - Suburban Safari : a year on the lawn by Hannah Holmes [QL 181 .H65 2005]. At Chattahoochee Technical College, we have an award winning Environmental Horticulture department which is based on the North Metro campus. I thought this title, Suburban Safari , would be about taking care of the yard over a year.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Ms. Holmes spent more time on the safari nature of the yard with her chapter on birds, then the one on insects, and another on squirrels. She does exhibit a light touch when covering what lives amongst the greenery. I found myself looking at my yard with a whole different attitude!

It's not a how to take care of the yard book. Yet, it is a very enjoyable read (and cheaper than taking a real safari).
