The Cosmetology program at NMTC offers salon treatments. The work is done by students who are eager to do their best under the watchful eyes of their instructors. Prices are very reasonable.
We do have resources for the Cosmetology students in GALILEO. We've added web sites that will help them as professionals. One site is Behind The Chair <http://behindthechair.com/>.
Proquest and EbschoHost have magazines on beauty. I used several search terms in the publication search area- beauty, salon, cosmetology, cosmetics, hair. Some terms were more successful than others.
Proquest does carry American Salon.
EbscoHost has Essence, Woman's Day, and Good Housekeeping.
There may be other magazines that would jump start your ideas about beauty.

Native Plants
I'm on a plant roll. Interesting article on Kudzu in the August edition of Southern Living (pg 48 "Turn the Tables on Kudzu: Eat the vine that ate the south. It's only fair" by Steve Bender). That's definitely not a native plant.
You can read Southern Living articles through GALILEO by way of Research Library (at Proquest). The Research Library at Proquest link is on the front page of GALILEO, on the left side, south of South America. The July issue of Southern Living is posted now (July 14) in Proquest.
GALILEO
....Research Library at Proquest
......Publications (4th tab from the left)
.........Publication search box - type in Southern Living (or whatever your favorite magazine is)
............Click on the link and there you go, Southern Living issues back to 1988!
If you're interested in Georgia Native Plants, you can go to this web site http://www.gnps.org/ (I've also linked it through GALILEO). Note the copyright date is 2002 and the officers term ended in 2003. Plant facts haven't changed. You would want to check on meetings, dues, etc though.

Landscaping
It's going to keep on raining. It's the wettest July in a long time.
Yesterday I mulled over looking through books and the Ohio Univeristy site for plant ideas.
Today would be a good day to skim through Historic Architecture and Landscapes of Georgia (on GALILEO) : The Hubert Bond Owens and John Linley Image Collections at the Owens Library, a joint project between the College of Environment and Design, University of Georgia and the Digital Library of Georgia, contains approximately 1500 images of important and representative architectural sites and landscapes in the state with an emphasis on Athens and Middle Georgia. The collections, held at the Owens Library in the College of Environment and Design at the University of Georgia, consist of color slides and black and white photographs taken from the 1940s through the 1980s by Owens and Linley. Owens, former dean of the University of Georgia's School of Environmental Design, taught landscape architecture at the university from 1928 to 1973 and designed the Founders Memorial Garden, a tribute to the first Garden Club in America. Linley, author of The Georgia Catalog, Historic American Buildings Survey: A Guide to the Architecture of the State and Architecture of Middle Georgia, was a faculty member from 1963 to 1986.
You get a good idea of what mature plants look like around different style homes.
The password for Georgia residents to use GALILEO at home is given out by the librarian.

Plants and more
The Horticulture program has won national awards at the American Landscape Contractors Association event the past few years.
Rex Bishop, one of our Environmental Horticulture instructors, has written a book:
A Field Guide to Woody Landscape Plants of the Southeast (you can find it in our library at SB 435.52 S67 B57 2002).
To assist horticulture students, we have added this web site to the GALILEO list of resources:
The Ohio State University Horticulture and Crop Science program (http://hcs.osu.edu/). The OSU WebGarden is a delightful place to find all sorts of plant information. The Images portion is one of my favorite places to browse: Images - (formerly Plant Dictionary) - A searchable database of high quality images featuring Ornamental plants, Turf, Plant Diseases, and Insects.
It's interesting to see the variety of students who participate in the Horticulture program at North Metro. It's not just for landscape company employees.

Rainy day fun
It's raining in Acworth- over 5 inches in my home rain gauge since Dennis started sharing the precipitation on Sunday.
What to do on a rainy day? Thumbing through the almanac can stimulate an "ah ha" moment.
....The World Almanac is on GALILEO- no pictures and you need to know what you're looking for
....InfoPlease has a free almanac on line http://www.infoplease.com with color pictures
....There are almanacs for check out in the AY 67 section of the library (Room 103). We put the two current years in reference. Everything else can be checked out.
There is so much stuff in an almanac- country information, statistics, pictures, lists of disasters, volcanoes, mountains, inventors- thumbing through an almanac creates a wonderful opportunity to say "Wow I didn't know that". And just think how prepared you'd be for Jeopardy or some game show.
