Which tool to use

When you work on a project you select the best tool to complete the task.

Ask has revamped its search engine to help distinguish itself from rivals such as Google and Microsoft.

In the revamp it has added to the traditional list of links results from a wide range of sources including videos and blogs.

The new page also lets users fine tune search terms to help them home in on the results they really want.

There are several ways to search. I've collected other search sites that you might find more useful than the same old one.....

Sustainable Urban Horticulture

With the landscape of modern horticulture practices changing, officials at North Metro Technical College will soon implement a new program to meet the growing needs of industries that are "going green."

The Acworth-based college will this fall begin offering a "Sustainable Urban Horticulture" diploma and degree sequence....

From the Daily Tribune .

We are collecting print and online resources to support this new program.

Fly the Flag

The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'.

Listening

This was an interesting take on the use of downloadable audio books (NetLibrary offers downloadable titles through some libraries)- they are not limited to your teenagers:

"Ninety percent of the people over there are listening to music, head banging, and I'm over there listening to Shelby Foote," Jim Burgin, 67 told the Tennessean in an article about the increasing popularity among seniors of downloadable audiobooks.

"It has really gone gangbusters," said Pat Thompson, special projects coordinator for the Tennessee State Library and Archives. "In library service we never know what population is going to take hold. It was an interesting anecdotal discovery to find many elderly people, or people who are a little older, were taking advantage of this program."

While you're on the road check out your local Cracker Barrel for audio books (and of course your local public library may have audio books that can be borrowed for free)---

Reading on the Road

Have you gotten to the airport and realized- no book to read but lots of time to wait for the plane? USA Today Columnist, Harriett Baskas offers these thoughts.....

"Love to read but not willing to shell out full price for a book you buy at the airport?

You don't have to.

Most airport bookshops offer some of the hottest bestsellers at reduced prices and most have a table or two filled with sale-priced and remaindered titles. And, like their counterparts at the mall, many airport bookstores offer frequent-buyer bonuses, coupons, gift-with-purchase or other incentives. There are even a handful of airports where used-book lovers will find fun browsing, cut-rate titles and even a book swapping program. .....

Ms. Basak continues with interesting tidbits about airport bookstores!

If you plan ahead- NMTC has a swap cart of paperbacks by the front door of the library!

A Fathers Day Gift idea

"A lenticular is an image that appears differently depending on how you look at it. If you’ve ever seen a postcard or movie poster that changes when you look at it from the left vs. the right, you’ve seen a lenticular.

Lenticulars usually require a special plastic sheet consisting of many tiny convex lenses, but you can make a super simple one with just two photos and some paper

And the answer is

Tests are not usually the place for creative writing. Yet, this blog has compiled some very creative answers to very black and white questions!

Amazing?

TrucstoP.com has suggested there might be a need to expand our vocabulary by using additional ways to express our amazement.

The thesaurus is a delightful tool for making sure you aren't using the same word over and over. GALILEO offers a thesaurus in Quick Search to help you think of other words to use for finding information. Microsoft Word also has a thesaurus to use.

Jazz up your writing- use words well!
