Define the Line

There's a saying about drawing a line in the sand- which means this is the limit, no more, there will be consequences...

"You might not realize it, but copying commercial software without permission or downloading it illegally is stealing. It's time to "Define theLine" between sharing and stealing when it comes to computer software"

"According to a study conducted by IPSOS Public Affairs, only 32 percent of students are paying for software most of the time. That leaves 68 percent ofstudents who are potentially using commercial software illegally"
Website listed in T.H.E. Newsletter for May 18, 2005 http://www.definetheline.com/

Sharing is OK with the cookies and candy that you purchased but sharing the software you purchased is not OK.

The Student Code of Conduct at NMTC is noted in the catalog:
"copying or tampering with computer files or programs...will subject the student to disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion."

Georgia on My Mind

The Digital Library of Georgia at GALILEO has a wealth of resources. "The Digital Library of Georgia is a gateway to Georgia's history and culture found in digitized books, manuscripts, photographs, government documents, newspapers, maps, audio, video, and other resources.

The Digital Library of Georgia connects users to 500,000 images and pages of text in 57 collections from 40 institutions. Though this represents only a fraction of Georgia's cultural treasures, the Digital Library of Georgia continues to grow through its partnerships with libraries, archives, museums, government agencies, and allied organizations across the state."

In the Reference section (4th link from the left in the orange bar) there is a list of Georgia Authors compiled in 2002. How many have you read?

Saturday hours

The experiment is over.

We tried Saturday hours for 10 months. The library was used a smidgeon- those who found it useful were very grateful. Staffing concerns are encouraging us to move personnel around.

We'll hopefully reinstate Saturday hours in September.

Open House on Wednesday

Come and see what NMTC has to offer. There will be an Open House on Wednesday, May 18 from 5:30-7:30 in the 400 building. Each program area will have a table set up to help you make a decision on what you'd like to do!

Out go the books

Yes, they are moving books out of one building into other buildings. "The University of Texas will convert its Undergraduate Library, located in the Peter T. Flawn Academic Center between the Student Union building and the UT Tower, into a nearly bookless "digital information center."

Job Fair in the 400 Building

There will be a Job Fair in the 400 Building from 10AM to 2PM today (Monday May 16)! Local employers will be taking resumes and talking about what they are looking for in an employee.

North Metro Tech has programs that can help you get into the workforce.
The Library has resources to support you in that endeavor!

Marching through the weekend

Humming "The Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa would have been appropriate this weekend.
On May 14, 1897 "The Stars and Stripes Forever" was first publicly performed in Philadelphia for the unveiling of a statue of George Washington.
