Flowers, bushes, and trees!

It feels like NMTC has a good collection of materials for our Environmental Horticulture program. (Check our card catalog)

This weekend while getting an orientation to the Kenan Research Center at the Atlanta History Center, our collection shrunk in comparison to the Cherokee Garden Library: Center for the Study of Southern Garden History. Their collection has "over 6500 volumes, the library contains 350 years of the literature of horticulture, landscape design, botany, and garden history."

The Kenan Research Center is open to the public at no charge,Tuesday through Saturday from 10-5.

Plugs in the floor

While rearranging the library, we discovered four electric outlets in the floor! We've put a round table over the outlets. Patrons are now able to plug in their laptop. We have wireless access, too!

Finding a needle in a haystack

Looking for just the right book can be difficult. "The OCLC Online Computer Library Center, a nonprofit group, announced this week that it was making available to the public WorldCat’s search engine of library holdings. WorldCat, which is maintained by the library center, is a database of materials from 10,000 libraries worldwide. Previously, only library patrons could gain access to WorldCat’s search tool. Now available through WorldCat.org, the search tool also helps people locate the library nearest them that has the book, article, or video or audio recording they are looking for. "People are starting their searches on the Web rather than in the library, and that’s where we want to be," said Bob Murphy, a spokesman for the library center.—Andrea L. Have you wondered where a journal can be found? Which database has the journal on-line? You could search each database for the publication titles. GALILEO has a new tool in preview:

A preview of the new GALILEO Find It electronic journals list is now available from the GALILEO homepage in the GALILEO demonstration system. The electronic journals list is powered by SFX with authentication support by EZproxy and provides a searchable list of all electronic journals available to your institution via GALILEO. Once the list is in production, linking among GALILEO resources will be implemented so that citations without full-text in one resource can link to full-text available in another.

One last trip

School is beginning to start in Georgia. Cherokee County began on Tuesday. Other counties begin this Monday. You still want to take a quick trip but don't know where to go?

ProQuest and EbscoHost use all sorts of magazines to get their articles. You can select one magazine to scroll through! I went to ProQuest, selected the Publications tab, typed in Travel (that limited the magazine search) - 15 titles came up. Among the titles were Travel & Leisure, Arthur Frommer's Travel, and Travel Holiday.

You may not have time to travel but these articles can whet your appetite for the next trip!

Pixels into pictures

The Digital Library of Georgia is a gateway to Georgia's history and culture found in digitized books, manuscripts, photographs, government documents, newspapers, maps, audio, video, and other resources.

The Digital Library of Georgia connects users to 500,000 images and pages of text in 90 collections from 55 institutions and 80 government agencies. Though this represents only a fraction of Georgia's cultural treasures, the Digital Library of Georgia continues to grow through its partnerships with libraries, archives, museums, government agencies, and allied organizations across the state.

The Digital Library of Georgia is a stand alone site. It may also be accessed through GALILEO

A new look

NetLibrary 4.0, an upgrade to the interface and search and navigation functionality of NetLibrary, was implemented today.

Key Features and Benefits

* New Site Architecture. A sleek new look and feel combined with simple intuitive navigation makes it easier to search across multiple formats.
* Automatic Summarization. Enables users to find the materials they are looking for quickly by providing a brief summary of eContent.
* Spell Checking. Automatically checks the spelling of a query term, recognizes commonly misspelled words and offers alternative spellings.
* Search within Search. Users can narrow search results by entering an additional search term or terms to drill down to relevant content.
* Concept Recommendations. Recognizes ambiguous search terms and provides recommendations for refining queries.

Shutting down for a bit

New carpet will be installed in the library beginning August 1! This is a wonderful thing to be happening but.....the other side to the wonderfulness is we will be closed, the computers will be moved out and chaos will reign....

Our online resources will be available- netLibrary and GALILEO. We have over 38,000 books in netLibrary and over 1500 journals in various databases (EbscoHost, ProQuest, and LexisNexis).

I'll try to find a computer where I can mention various resources that are available to you.

Whose got it?

No library has everything. Most libraries belong to a consortium which enables the library to borrow materials for patrons from other libraries. This system is called "Inter Library Loan".

One institution borrows from another institution for the benefit of the patron. (In Georgia - Board of Regents students and faculty may borrow directly from a BOR library through GIL but that's another blog)

How do you find out which library has the book you'd like to read? In GALILEO, there is a database - WorldCat - "The WorldCat database is the world's most comprehensive bibliography with bibliographic records representing information spanning 4,000 years of knowledge. It is the OCLC Online Union Catalog of information contributed by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) member libraries worldwide. "

Look and see, then ask the librarian to order a book for you through ILL. It takes 1-2 weeks for items to arrive.

not a light summer read

Beloved: A Novel by Toni Morrison (PS 3563 .O8749 B4 1987) looks like it might be a light beach book - something to fritter away the hours of a summer afternoon. Yet, there is a Contemporary Literary Views Book, Bloom's Notes (PS 3563 .O8749 B4378 1999) edited by Harold Bloom that delves into the deepest meaning of the story.

From the book jacket: "It is the story - set in post Civil War Ohio - of Sethe, an escaped slave who has risked death in order to wrench herself from a living death; who has lost a husband and buried a child; who has borne the unthinkable and not gone mad...."

Day 5

It is Day 5 of the quarter for the Monday/Wednesday classes.This is the day the librarian goes to each SCT 100 (Introduction to Computers) class. We go over the OPAC (card catalog) for the library, netLibrary, GALILEO, ProQuest, and the internet sites that have been added to GALILEO. It's a full hour. We only scratch the surface of what's available at NMTC.

Tomorrow is Day 5 for the Tuesday/Thursday classes.

News to use

You want to keep on top of the news in the Business world, but how do you find every article about your business?

EbscoHost offers this database: Business Source Premier which provides full text for over 2,280 journals covering all aspect of business. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 2,440 journals. Business Source Premier contains popular business publications such as Business Week, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, and hundreds of scholarly, peer reviewed journals. Also included is Wall Street Words, a dictionary of financial terms, linked directly to words within the citations and full text.

Touring

Visiting museums to view art is a vacation activity that many people enjoy. Sometimes, the expense of travel makes the museum tour a treat rather than a regular event. Grove Art Online in GALILEO allows you to view art at your convenience without the expense of travel.

In Grove Art Online there is an Images link that takes you to the "Bridgeman Art Library " which "is one of the largest art image providers world-wide. This online art image collection offers over 100,000 art images from major international museums, galleries and auction houses."

Calm before....

Last day of break. Summer Quarter starts on Monday. The Orientations yesterday had quite a few students for summer.

Monday is the celebration lunch at 11:30. It is great news to have been accredited by SACS-COC. It's always nice to have an outsider affirm that you're doing a good job.

Our on-line catalog can make searching for print, non print and electronic resources at NMTC very easy.

The Simple Search will pull up everything on a topic. It is limited to 100 items. You may need to go to Advanced search to narrow your query.

Advanced Search allows you to limit your searching to specific types of materials.

Long weekend

The library has been closed for the 4th of July weekend. We're getting ready for Summer Quarter to begin next Monday, July 10th.

Whew!

We're getting the library back in order- slowly but surely, dusting, sorting, etc. Getting everything moved around helps one consider what to keep and what to pitch!

FYI We'll be closed on Monday the 3rd and Tuesday the 4th. Back to normal on Wednesday, July 5th!

Found some interesting books while moving things around- one book we moved to the Atlas stand from the Reference room-

- small maps, lots of text- looks like an encyclopedia rather than a "pure" atlas.

The Digital Library of Georgia and the Hargrett Rare Books & Manuscripts Library are pleased to announce the availability of a new online resource:

University of Georgia Centennial Alumni Catalog, 1901.

In 1901, to celebrate 100 years of classes at the Athens campus, the University of Georgia assembled the Centennial Alumni Catalog, containing, "as far as possible, a full but concise account of the life and services of all alumni during the century." Although the word "alumni" was used, the project attempted to collect biographical data about anyone who matriculated at the university during that first century, whether or not they graduated.
A four-page questionnaire was mailed to known matriculates or their families and an impressive 1,749 completed forms were returned. These were placed in alphabetical order, bound into several volumes, and deposited with the University Libraries. Eventually they came to be housed in the University Archives unit of the Hargrett Rare Books & Manuscripts Library at the University of Georgia Libraries, where they have proved to be a valuable resource to historians and genealogists.
Included are biographies of many prominent men of 19th century Georgia and the South, sometimes written in their own hand.
In 2006 the fragile documents were removed from their bindings, at times revealing information long hidden beneath the stitching. The forms then were scanned and are presented online by the Digital Library of Georgia.
The questionnaires provide information on residence; nativity; collegiate activities and accomplishments; marriage; occupations; civic, military, religious, and other public service; writings; relatives who attended the University; and death date.

The painters assure me- they will finish today. The library does look fresh and bright.

Digital Library of Georgia

There is a new "book" in the Digital Library of Georgia. For the centennial of the University of Georgia in the early 1900's, UGA asked the alumni to respond to a survey. The surveys were bound in books. The books have been unbound and the surveys scanned! What a treat to read what UGA alumni had to say about themselves! I found a few kin in this "book". Wonderful to read in their own hand information about their lives!

(When I can get back to my e-mail, I'll post the URL to this item...I've just searched the Digital Library and I'm not finding it- paint fumes are overwhelming me)

It's Official!

North Metro Technical College has added another level of accreditation!

We are now accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award associate degrees, 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; 404-679-4501.

This is in addition to our accreditation by the Council on Occupational Education (COE), 41 Perimeter Center East, N.E., Suite 640, Atlanta, Georgia 30346; 770-396-3898.

And then what?

Historical events seen through the eyes of the participants (especially the eyes of regular folks) give a slightly different take. Encourage the people you know to journal, to write a diary that can be read in 150 years.

The Cornelius C. Platter Civil War Diary of Lt. (later Capt.) Cornelius C. Platter, of the 81st Ohio Infantry Volunteers, covers November, 1864 April 27, 1865. Platter's diary details Sherman's march through Georgia from Rome to Savannah and the march north through the Carolinas. He gives dates, times, and lengths of marches and describes the weather, locale, scenery, and food as well as orders, rumors, positions, troop morale, and administrative duties. The diary also includes a description of the burning of Columbia, South Carolina, the news of the Confederate surrender, and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Checking that list

Feels like Christmas Eve, waiting till the students come back- so quiet, not a creature is stirring...

Lists, of materials that are checked out, are being distributed to program areas. This is our annual lets-see-what-we-own-and-then-we-can-clean-up-the-catalog time.

Do you move from computer to computer and wish you had your internet Favorites list at each computer?

With sites like del.icio.us you can create your personal and portable list of links that you can access from any computer. del.icio.us is not new- it was created in December of 2003.

Google books is a super way to find print materials "but the aim of Google Book Search is to help you discover books and learn where to buy or borrow them, not read them from start to finish. "

But you want to read the entire book -

complete books (from start to finish) are available to you on-line through netLibrary.

NMTC has over 38,000 books available through netLibrary. Cookbooks, poetry, fiction, genealogy, science, business, jokes (yes, jokes) .....

Latin American journals

In GALILEO is CLASE and PERIÓDICA which is an index (this is the key word- index - this database tells you who has the articles but does not provide the articles) of Latin American journals in the sciences and humanities compiled by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. This resource combines two databases:

CLASE (Citas Latinoamericanas en Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades) includes more than 198,000 references in the humanities and social sciences, selected from more than 1,200 journals and other materials published in Latin American and Caribbean countries. The database covers topics such as accounting, anthropology, the arts, business administration, library and information science, communications, demographics, economics, education, sociology, law, political science, linguistics, management, history, philosophy, and literature.

PERIÓDICA (Índice de Revistas Latinoamericanas en Ciencias) includes more than 204,000 citations to articles and other documents from over 1,400 Latin American and Caribbean scientific and technological journals. Among the subjects covered are agricultural sciences, biology, physics, geosciences, engineering, medicine, and chemistry.

5. click on Academic Search Premier (at EbscoHost) -
6. Click on the Publications button (second one in on thick green bar)
7. Go to Browse publications (under Publications tab)
8. Type the title you are looking for in the box
9. Click on the title
10. On the far right side of the screen, click on Journal Alert (not every magazine offers a Journal Alert)
11.On the left side of the screen there is a link for I’m a New User (if you are a New User create an acount, if you have an account log-in)

Summer fun!

Sometimes you can't leave home to have fun, so you sit around wondering what to do......you've played all the video games (and won), you've watched all the movies, TV is into re-runs of re-runs- so what is there to do?

Try "Searchasaurus: Primary/Elementary Search is designed for elementary school students. 55 full-text childrens' publications and 120 general publications for professionals working with students on the primary/elementary level are included. 300 full text pamphlets are also included. In additional to searchable full-text for some publications, photos are included in many articles. "

There's also "Searchasaurus: Middle Search Plus provides full text from nearly 90 general, reference, health, and science publications. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for over 130 magazines, including charts, tables, graphs, and photographs."

It is an EbscoHost product. The layout is colorful and fun to use! Encyclopedia articles, fun facts- things you never thought to ask about but there they are! It's aimed at Elemantary through Middle School students but the information is useful for any age.

Dissertation, thesis and more

Find out what a recent graduate from UGA's masters or doctoral program wrote for their thesis or dissertation.

The "University of Georgia Electronic Theses and Dissertations is a collection of the theses and dissertations submitted electronically to the Graduate School at the University of Georgia since the summer of 1999.

All dissertations are included, although some may not be viewable from off campus. The record for an individual document is always viewable, and will indicate the availability of the document. The author of a dissertation or thesis, in conjunction with his or her major professor, makes the determination if the work will be publicly available."

You may ask the Librarian to borrow any title found in World Cat from another library (some things don't get loaned - brand new fiction, Reference, Genealogy, Archival materials, videos, etc).

Numbers.

In many parts of the world numbers tell a story. A search in Encyclopedia Britannica notes that Numerology is the "use of numbers to interpret a person's character or to divine the future. The theory behind numerology is based on the Pythagorean idea that all things can be expressed in numerical terms because they are ultimately reducible to numbers. " There is more in the Encyclopedia about numerology.

Remembering the heroes

The History Channel had a show recently about D-Day (June 6, 1944) when our troops landed on the Beaches of Normandy. A Google search turned up the The National D-Day Memorial Foundation .

There are two titles in netLibrary that might interest a history buff: The Comanche Code Talkers of World War II and Normandy to the Bulge : An American Infantry GI in Europe During World War II .

You can access the NMTC books in netLibrary through its link or through GALILEO or through the NMTC card catalog !

To use netLibrary off campus you must create a free account on campus (so netLibrary will recognize you as a NMTC user).

Weekend trips

When you're thinking about where to go this summer- you can tie history in with day trips touring parts of the south pictured in Barnard's Photographic Views of the Sherman Campaign, ca. 1866 : Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, Embracing Scenes of the Occupation of Nashville, the Great Battles around Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, the Campaign of Atlanta, March to the Sea, and the Great Raid through the Carolinas.

The first pictures are of Kennesaw! "Compare and contrast" is a skill used in life (and emphasized in academic circles). Can you find the same location where George N. Barnard stood to take his pictures? What does the scene look like now? Take your own pictures and compare the changes.

Did you notice folks around you with pink or even red skin after the holiday weekend? Did you wonder what could be done to ease the pain?

Alt Health Watch (EbscoHost) in GALILEO found 350 articles when searched using the word sunburn. The very first article that came up with the search was:

Indians of the Southeast

Some stories portray the Native American population as ignorant savages. This database sets that story to rest. Read how the Cherokee created a written language and created a government similar to the United States in Southeastern Native American Documents, 1730-1842.

The DaVinci Code opens to fanfare, mystery, and agitation. What are people saying about the movie no one has seen? Using QuickSearch on the Home page of GALILEO turned up 125 articles in LexisNexis- including transcripts from CNN, 256 articles from Research Libraries, 836 articles from MasterFILE, 259 articles from ProQuest, and 660 articles from Academic Search Premier.

Wait till they see the movie. What will they say then?

Heavy Searching

It's not quick or easy but you can use a database called Article First to search for a specific article. All they list is the citation- which is handy for your bibliography. You'll have to order a copy of the article through InterLibrary Loan or search through the other databases to see if that periodical is listed. Definitely for those who don't mind a bit of delayed gratification.

"Article First contains bibliographic citations that describe items listed on the table of contents pages of journals in science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture. Each record describes one article, news story, letter, or other item.
The database, formerly know as ContentsFirst, is now included the ArticleFirst database. It is now possible to search for and view both journals' tables of contents and individual article citations in the ArticleFirst database.

OCLC provides title lists of periodicals included in their many databases. (Not all FirstSearch databases are included in GALILEO.) Once at their Periodical Titles in OCLC FirstSearch page, select the name of the database of interest then click the "List Titles" button. Other options are also available, such as "Search by Title," to discover in which database a publication is included. NOTE: Use the browser's BACK button to return to GALILEO."

The big databases in GALILEO are ProQuest, EbscoHost, and LexisNexis. ProQuest and EbscoHost have a publications list that you can browse through.

Half page advertisement for Hoovers.com in Tuesday's AJC. Touting that Hoover's "is the best and truly ultimate source for business intelligence". They're offering a free trial.

You can use the information from Hoover's through GALILEO at ProQuest. The site won't look like Hoover's Business but you will get company information like Hoover's Business!

Sighting sources then Citing sources

Sighting sources - what do you see?

They sound alike but are quite different.

Sighting a source means looking for something and finding it.
Citing a source means telling your reader where you found the information.

How do you tell your reader where you found the information you used in your paper? Some instructors want you to use MLA (Modern Language Association). Some want you to use APA (American Psychological Association). Then some instructors like Turabian. What is a student to do?

On the home page of GALILEO, on the far left under Quick Help! is a How Do I... drop down box. Way down on the list is "cite articles". This will lead you to a page of examples for APA, MLA, and Turabian.

Planting, growing, etc

There is a resource that we added to GALILEO, National Agricultural Library. The NAL catalog lets you know what is available. Materials must be borrowed through the NMTC library (and there is a fee). The NAL site includes some free web sites.

"The National Agricultural Library is one of four national libraries of the United States, with locations in Beltsville, Maryland and Washington, D.C. It houses one of the world's largest and most accessible agricultural information collections and serves as the nexus for a national network of state land-grant and U.S. Department of Agriculture field libraries. In fiscal year 2005 (Oct 2004 through Sept 2005) NAL delivered more than 80 million direct customer service transactions."

We can use the titles they suggest to search WorldCat and see if there are other libraries that hold these items. We might be able to borrow the item for free!

Where shall we go?

Are you beginning to think about summer trips? Maybe you'll be taking short trips around Georgia that won't use a whole lot of gas.

Browse through the Sanborn Insurance maps on GALILEO. The University of Georgia Libraries Map Collection holds Sanborn® maps of Georgia towns published between 1884 and 1935, and it holds microfilm copies for maps dated 1935-1985. For a complete list of the University of Georgia Libraries' Sanborn® map holdings, see the Sanborn® Maps at the University of Georgia Libraries page.

And what are the Sanborn maps? The Sanborn® maps are large-scale maps of U.S. cities and towns. Originally designed for purposes of fire insurance assessment, the maps are highly detailed, showing not only the location and size of buildings and streets, but also the placement of water mains, fire walls, and other urban features.

Each city or town is mapped on one or more sheet that includes the downtown region, some housing areas, and local mills. Outlying mill sites and small populated centers in the country near a town are sometimes included as insets.

Compare what was, with what is, as you wander through some of the lovely small towns of Georgia! You could even do that comparison from your desktop (and save on gas!)

Here comes the Judge!

Today, the Librarian will be at the Georgia Public Broadcasting System participating in the 30th Georgia Student Media Festival. The purpose of the Georgia Student Media Festival is to stimulate student interest and involvement in all types of media production. This is accomplished by providing an opportunity for students to show their work to an interested audience, to have the work critiqued by a panel of expert judges, and to be stimulated by the work of other students.

How many databases can you search?

Have you tried the Quick Search function on GALILEO? This new feature was activated, after several months of trials, at the end of March. Enter your subject and notice that Quick Search will look through 5 databases in a General search. If you limit your search to one of the Subject areas - it will search through the databases that are listed under the tabs across the top!

You can do an Advanced Search and pick and choose the databases you want the search to utilize.

Wonderful days, sunny, not too cold, not too hot, just right Spring days. Perfect for sitting under a tree and losing oneself in a novel. We have a paperback trade rack by the front door. You bring in a paperback and then take away a paperback! Our book budget is geared to purchasing materials that support the programs at NMTC- no money to purchase fiction for fun. We are providing an opportunity for our patrons to have a selection of fun reading!

Poetry is used to create a rhythm in a story. Green Eggs and Ham (PZ8.3 .G276 GR) by Dr. Seuss rolics along with rhyming verse that closes with "Thank you! Thank you, Sam-I-Am."

Our childrens literature section has several authors who have written their stories in rhyming verse. It does help a child remember the story.

Have you ever wondered why people write poetry?

The Columbia History of British Poetry by Carl Woodring (PR 502 C62 1994) might help you understand.

"Literature in the shapeless galaxy of Indo-European languages has no brighter constellation than that of British poetry." There are 26 chapters each written by a different expert "...they remind us that poetry is a social record of the kinds of events ordinarily excluded from the histories written of various nations and peoples." (from the Introduction)

Mother Goose Matters

How many Mother Goose rhymes do you remember? Children should be able to recite 5 Mother Goose rhymes before they enter Kindergarten. Saying Mother Goose rhymes builds the brain, enhances vocabulary, enables your child to get a 2400 on the SAT (well, that may not be true).

Edward Lear wrote The Owl and the Pussycat in 1871.
