The first day of May, traditionally an occasion for springtime festivities, and later also designated a holiday in honour of working people in many countries (also known outside North America as Labour Day: see LABOUR n. 8). Also: any other day near the start of May designated a public holiday (in the United Kingdom the first Monday in May).
