Wireless arrives!
NMTC now has wireless access for students and visitors (as of April 7, 2006). Tech Services installed an access point (AP) near the Café North Metro. This location was decided on because the coverage area would encompass the Library, Café, Auditorium, and the common area in front of the Admissions Office.
The AP can be utilized by the students as well as faculty and staff without having to enter a username and password. They will have access to the Internet, but not the NMTC network shares (P, H, and I). Also their Internet traffic will still be monitored/filtered by WebSense.
Please let your students know that this new service is available, but also remind them of a few things…
· Students and employees utilizing Technical College-provided Internet access are responsible for good behavior on-line just as they are in a classroom or other area of the college.
· The purpose of Technical College-provided Internet access is to facilitate communications in support of research and education. To remain eligible as users, students' use must be in support of and consistent with the educational objectives of the Department. Access is a privilege, not a right. Access entails responsibility. (Abuse could lead to removal of this privilege!)
· All information created, stored or transmitted by Department or Technical College computers or networks is subject to monitoring for compliance with applicable laws and policies.

The People's Poet
Pablo Neruda (1904-1973), born Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, took the name of the Czech poet Jan Neruda because he knew his family would not approve of a man writing poetry.
Pablo went on to write more than 35 books and win the 1971 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The work piles up
When a person takes a break from work, the work doesn't stop. When the person returns to the desk- the stacks await.... Stacks are being diminished as the Librarian returns to the fold.

We noticed that both North Metro and Georgia Highlands (we share the library) have overlapping Spring Break for the next few days. The library will close tonight and tomorrow (Wednesday March 22 and Thursday March 23) at 5PM. We will be closed on Saturday.
Back to regular hours on Monday when Georgia Highlands comes back for the rest of their semester.

Beware the Ides
I used Google to find information on the Ides of March. It quickly offered me InfoPlease (the first site among 7,250,000 others) where I read all about the middle of the month and Julius Caeser and Shakespeare.
I did then search through GALILEO. I looked at Encyclopedia Britannica, Funk & Wagnalls, Searchasaurus, Oxford English Dictionary.
Google gave me the quickest response for this bit of fact finding.
Knowing what to use as the best resource for finding information is the key to information literacy.

Nutritionists tell us that "breakfast is the most important meal of the day"! 7 months
Diaries are important. They document from a single persons perspective what was happening in the world around them. "The Samuel Hugh Hawkins Diary, January - July 1877, donated by Georgia State Senator George Hooks to the Lake Blackshear Regional Library System, chronicles Americus, Georgia entrepreneur, lawyer, and banker Samuel Hawkins' financial, agricultural, civic, and religious activities in Sumter County during the final months of Reconstruction. Diary entries briefly illustrate Hawkins' work at the Bank of Americus and his real estate interests in the county. Having an interest in agriculture and horticulture, Hawkins describes his participation in the Sumter County Agricultural Society and Horticulture Society, attendance at the 1877 Georgia State Agricultural Society meeting in Milledgeville, entrepreneurial interest in the Bell Cultivator, and role in the founding of the Americus Fair Association. While later known for his role as president of the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railroad Company, Hawkins mentions railroad issues only in passing. An active member of Bethel Baptist Church (later Americus Baptist Church), Hawkins records his religious observances throughout the journal. On a national level, Hawkins comments on the contested presidential election of 1876 and the resulting presidency of Republican candidate, Rutherford B. Hayes. Locally, he chronicles city and county elections and appointments to the constitutional convention, the efforts of an emigrant agent to lure local African Americans to Louisiana as contract laborers as well as events surrounding the murder of a white woman by an African American man."

Gold Rush season
Gold Rush days in Dahlonega are held the third weekend of October (Oct 21-22, 2006). Lots of lovely Autumn color. Spring is another gorgeous time to head for the hills.
Before you head out for an educational day trip check out the Digital Library of Georgia's "Thar's Gold in Them Thar Hills": Gold and Gold Mining in Georgia, 1830s-1940s consists of selected legal, financial, and promotional documents as well as photographs and picture postcards that represent episodes of renewed interest in gold mining in Lumpkin County during Reconstruction, at the turn of the century, and during the Depression. Culled from three archival collections at the Lumpkin County Library of the Chestatee Regional Library System, the selected textual materials cover the late 1830s through the early 1940s, but focus primarily on the period between Reconstruction and the turn of the twentieth century. Before you head out for an educational day trip check out the Digital Library of Georgia's "Thar's Gold in Them Thar Hills": Gold and Gold Mining in Georgia, 1830s-1940s consists of selected legal, financial, and promotional documents as well as photographs and picture postcards that represent episodes of renewed interest in gold mining in Lumpkin County during Reconstruction, at the turn of the century, and during the Depression. "Community Art in Atlanta, 1977-1987: Jim Alexander's Photographs of the Neighborhood Arts Center from the Auburn Avenue Research Library consists of fifty-five documentary photographs of the Neighborhood Arts Center (1975-1989) that capture significant African American-centered cultural and community events in and around the Atlanta-based organization, a brainchild of the late mayor Maynard Jackson. This body of images documents a visit to the Center from the legendary Romare Bearden, as well as Atlanta-area outreach projects, arts festivals, and social demonstrations that took place during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Taken by photographer, community activist, and Neighborhood Arts Center staff member Jim Alexander, these photographs demonstrate the Center's service commitment and its promotion of urban community arts."

No more lines
The NMTC Bookstore has a web site for student and faculty convenience. Lines have been notorious on the first day of class as students try to purchase books before class. Now students can order their textbooks online and receive them at home! No more lines. Students will be able to have their books with them on the first day without standing in line at the bookstore.

A picture is worth 1000 words
The collection is primarily what we would call snapshots of life. There are a few formal portraits. My favorite snapshot is the "woman with her hands on her hips" (page 2, right hand column).

Vicinity (Richmond Co.) consists of 86 Glass plate negatives and positive prints of African-Americans in the Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia area. Robert E. Williams, an African-American photographer, operated a studio, R. Williams and Son, in Augusta, Georgia, from 1888 until around 1908. The photographs depict dwellings and domestic chores, rituals of baptism, harvesting and transporting cotton, vehicles and transportation, and children and family life. 84 of the images are presented online, as two of the negatives are copies. "

Civil Rights
And you thought the Civil Rights movement blossomed in the 1960's. Read these letters from the 1860's to see how freed black people were striving to be a part of the political process.
"The Civil Unrest in Camilla, Georgia, 1868 collection, located at the DeSoto Trail Library and comprised of photostatic copies from the Freedman's Bureau records held by the National Archives, consists of letters, affidavits, reports and a newspaper clipping relating to a violent episode in Camilla, Georgia. The incident occurred on September 19, 1868 when freedmen, together with Republicans W.P. Pierce, John Murphy and F.F. Putney attempted to hold a political rally, and were met with opposition from the white townspeople of Camilla. The dates of the documents largely span from September 19 through October of 1868 and include correspondence between Caleb Chase Sibley, assistant commissioner for the Freedmen’s Bureau in the state of Georgia, the Commissioner, Oliver Otis Howard, the Secretary of War John M. Schofield, and George Gordon Meade, military commander of the Third Military District in Georgia, as well as lesser-known Bureau agents’ correspondence, reports and affidavits containing first hand accounts of the incident from freedmen and others. "

I'm bored
Some school districts are taking a winter break this week. What do you do with the children when they are home day after day?
Our Early Childhood Education program has a collection of resources for planning activities. One item is: The Complete Resource Book: An Early Childhood Curriculum by Pam Schiller (LB 1140.4 .S35 1998). The book offers "a complete plan for every day of every week of the year, this book can also be an excellent reference book for responding to children's specific interests."
When the child says, "I'm bored, there's nothing to do" - the resources in the LB section may offer you ideas for activities and projects to keep those idle hands busy.

Behind the scenes

"The Blues, Black Vaudeville, and the Silver Screen, 1912-1930s consists of selected correspondence, financial records, contracts, and advertising materials from the theater's records found in the Charles Henry Douglass, Jr. business records at the Middle Georgia Archives, which document the amusements available to Macon's African American population, and the business dealings of this African American entrepreneur from 1912 to the 1930s. The bulk of these selected records feature the period between 1920 and 1929, and describe the sporting events, vaudeville, and films brought to the theater, as well as the efforts to ensure its financial success. Handbills and booking correspondence document Georgia-based fighters such as Tiger Flowers and Texas Tanner who sought to fight at the venue in 1927. Douglass and Ben Stein, a white businessman who assumed ownership of the theater between 1927 and 1929, were affiliated with the Theatre Owners Booking Association (T.O.B.A.), a vaudeville circuit. This gave them access to bring prominent acts to Macon's African American community, such as well-known blues musicians Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, comedians Butterbeans and Susie, as well as musicals, revues, and sacred theater. When not hosting live acts, the Douglass also exhibited a wide variety of sound and silent motion pictures. Selected records feature race films (movies made specifically for African American audiences) of producers such as the Norman Film Manufacturing Company and Oscar Micheaux. The selections highlight other Southern African American theaters, such as the Palace Theatre in Valdosta, Georgia, Liberty Theatre in Columbus, Georgia, and the Liberty Theatre in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Folks who do serious research want to look at the original document. They don't want to read bits and pieces in an article about the document. They want to read the original work. How do they find where the primary source might be?

Death and taxes
Benjamin Franklin (who would have turned 300 this year) said "but in this world nothing can be certain, except death and taxes."

It is tax season. Banks, insurance companies, mortgage companies, employers and other financial institutions are providing the neccessary documents to fill out your tax form. Where can you get a paper tax form? Your public library has the forms for both federal and state taxes.

Where did they come from?
Black History month inspires some people to look for their great grandparents and great-great grandparents. "The Ancestry Library Edition collection has approximately 4,000 databases including key collections such as U.S. federal census images and indexes from 1790 to 1930; the Map Center containing more than 1,000 historical maps; American Genealogical Biographical Index (over 200 volumes), Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage (over 150 volumes), The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1630, Social Security Death Index, WWI Draft Registration Cards, Federal Slave Narratives, and a strong Civil War collection. All materials may be searched at once (using a basic or advanced search screen), or various databases and indexes may be searched individually. "

The more things change!
As the saying goes...the more things change, the more they stay the same. This is the time of year for political leaders to give their "state-of-the-political-institution" address. You can read what the Mayor of Savannah had to say in his annual reports. "The annual reports of the Mayor of the city of Savannah Georgia for the years 1855-1917 include information on city activities and finances, commercial statistics, health, death, and illness statistics, and information on trade, public schools, weather, charitable institutions and city ordinances. The documents also include reports of the City Attorney, the Police Department (including crime statistics), the City Engineer, the Fire Department (including statistics on fires and property losses), and the Board of Trade, among others."
You won't be surprised to read how nothing has really changed. There is some comfort to the notion that things stay the same- of course, there is some distress to the notion, too!

History is for everyone
Annals of American History Online includes the full text of over 2000 primary documents in American history, including historical accounts, speeches, memoirs, poems, editorials, landmark court decisions, and cultural criticism. Who's on first?
The classic comedy sketch "Who's on first?" still brings laughs! But when you're looking for a book and can't figure out who has it...there is very little laughing going on....look in World Cat to find out what library has the title you are looking for. Your librarian can then request that title through InterLibrary Loan. The process takes about two weeks.

J.A. Jones Construction Company and Liberty Ships in Brunswick, Georgia
"The online collection consists of eighty-four black-and-white photographs from the J.A. Jones Construction Company collection at the Brunswick-Glynn County Library that depict the company’s World War II cargo ship building activities in its Brunswick, Georgia shipyard from 1943 to 1945. The images document the life cycle of the Liberty and Knot ships built in Brunswick: from keel-laying and hull construction to christening and launch. Construction techniques are visible in many of the photographs, and several images feature the shipyard’s male and female laborers and management staff. In addition, the launch photographs feature ship sponsors and other dignitaries. Of particular note is a series of photographs depicting Christmas Day, 1944, when the shipyard workers volunteered to work through the holiday, donating their time-and-a-half pay as a Christmas gift to the nation. "

Easy searching
There is a resource in GALILEO noted for Middle School and High School students called Student Research Center (by EbscoHost)- #162 in the NMTC list. The magazines that are indexed are not what I would limit to Middle School and High School (Economist, US News & World Report, New Republic, Newsweek to name a few).
This particular database is "prettier" than the straight EbscoHost and feels friendlier. If you're looking for current events and history this might be the database to use. Advanced search offers you several ways to focus your search-including by reading level.

Winter chills

Do you remember?
Did you browse through old family pictures over the holiday? Sharing stories, laughing, crying, remembering what was? Remembering. Pictures help us remember.
Vanishing Georgia (#170 on the NMTC list in GALILEO) "comprises nearly 18,000 photographs. Ranging from daguerreotypes to Kodachrome prints, the images span over 100 years of Georgia history. Today is the first day of the Winter Quarter for NMTC. Students are buying books, looking for classrooms, and checking with friends!

New books!
Before Christmas we ordered books for the library! The boxes are arriving.
One new title "Born Losers: A History of Failure" tells the story of American failure. Our greatest fear is being a failure. This book tells the cultural history of American failures.
On the bright side, we purchased "The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness". This sequel to "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey takes the reader on the next step to success.
Come by the library and check out these new books!

We have just purchased, the recently well reviewed in Library Journal, Garden Literature Index for our Horticulture program. The database is available through GALILEO.

Topics include horticulture, garden and landscape design and history, botany, ecology, plant and garden conservation, garden management, and horticultural therapy. We are delighted to have received a gift from a fellow DTAE school of a print set of Contemporary Authors! The other school is purchasing the online database and needed the shelf space so we are the benificiaries!
Contemporary Authors published by Gale contains "biographical information on more than 120,000 modern novelists, poets, playwrights, nonfiction writers, journalists and scriptwriters in the award-winning Contemporary Authors® series.
Sketches typically include personal information, addresses, career history, writings, work in progress, biographical/critical sources and authors' comments and/or informative essays about their lives and work."
This is a superb addition to our reference collection!

One can always Google to find a business- type in the name of the company or the type of business. One always takes chances that way- similar named companies appear, thousands of sites show up. Who has the time to weed through the massive amount of information?

The Thomas Register is "the most comprehensive resource for industrial information, products, services, CAD drawings, and more." For our technical programs this is one site that helps students connect with companies in the students field of study.

Mapping your USA travels
It is getting close to holiday travel time. Some folks go "home", others take a vacation in an exotic locale.
This site is a fun way to way to map your US travels: "Go to http://www.world66.com/myworld66/visitedStates and you can click on the list of states which you have visited. Then the map will color in red the states you have visited. Makes a nice visual of your travels."
The atlas is a delightful way to armchair travel. There doesn't seem to be a specific atlas in GALILEO. The Encyclopedia and the Almanac have maps of countries!

Safe place to look
There are times when being a kid is the best! Folks explain things better to kids. They make it easier to understand. Yet, on the internet, one has to be so careful.
GALILEO has a link to KidsClick! Web Search for Kids by Librarians -Links to great sites for kids on all topics (current events, science & math, fine arts, sports & recreation and more). Searches can be limited by reading level (up to grade 2, grades 3 - 6, grades 7 and up). A privacy policy is posted on the site.
It's a safe place to find information for both children and adults- the sites aren't "kiddie sites". They are places with real information!

GALILEO has a link to KidsClick! Web Search for Kids by Librarians -Links to great sites for kids on all topics (current events, science & math, fine arts, sports & recreation and more). Searches can be limited by reading level (up to grade 2, grades 3 - 6, grades 7 and up). A privacy policy is posted on the site.
It's a safe place to find information for both children and adults- the sites aren't "kiddie sites". They are places with real information!

Planning a party!
Oh boy! It's party time- all over the world folks are celebrating beginnings and endings. Some are building bonfires for the Winter Soltice, some are burning candles for Advent or Hannukah or Kwanzaa. Some are thinking ahead to New Years Eve! A time for sparkling something or other to imbibe (responsibly).
Where does one go to learn about the best wine for a celebration? Many turn to the venerable magazine Wine Spectator. You don't want to purchase the magazine at your local store (or maybe they don't have it on the shelf). What's a party planner to do?

A date which will live in infamy
American familes were touched by the attack on Pearl Harbor. My mother very clearly remembers that Sunday afternoon, Dec 7 1941, her Dad was painting the dining room ceiling. When the news of the attack on Pearl Harbor came across the radio, he stopped painting and went immediately to the office. He worked for Western Electric. The line across the ceiling remained there through out the war. What story does your family have about Dec 7 ,1941?

They welcomed strangers
We arrived as immigrants and many of the local folks welcomed us. The Digital Library of Georgia has a collection of Southeastern Native American Documents, 1730-1842, which contain approximately 2,000 documents and images relating to the Native American population of the Southeastern United States from the collections of the University of Georgia Libraries, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville Library, the Frank H. McClung Museum, the Tennessee State Library and Archives, the Tennessee State Museum and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian. The documents are comprised of letters, legal proceedings, military orders, financial papers, and archaeological images relating to Native Americans in the Southeast.

We have the ability to add web sites to GALILEO. This makes GALILEO a one stop research center for NMTC.
This site, U.S. News Archives on the Web, is a listing of local newspapers web sites. They are arranged in alphabetical order by state, then by city. There are notes on what it costs to get a print of an article. Find out what the headlines are in various parts of the country- it's interesting to read what editors think is the important news of the day.

Re-gifting
Lots of jokes about re-gifting (giving a gift you received to someone else as a gift). This is the time of year to share our bounty with those in different circumstances.
Did you buy a new cell phone or are you planning to buy a new cell phone for a gift? What do you do with the old cell phone?
The Georgia Phi Chapter (Rad Tech program) at North Metro Technical College is collecting old cell phones. They will give the old cell phones to "Cell Phones for Soldiers" who will then recycle the phones and use the cash to buy phone cards for our soldiers overseas.
There is a box in the library for old cell phones! This is a regifting with benefits.

Grandma, Grandpa and who?
Holidays frequently bring relatives together for a meal or two. Distant cousins are discussed. Family stories are traded. Memories are shared. Laughter and tears are the norm. Who was here? What did they do? Someone gets interested in finding more information about the family.
In GALILEO, while at the library, one can use Ancestry.com. The World War I Draft Registration cards are on-line - these tell a mans birthdate, birthplace, eye color, haircolor and if he was bald! The census from 1930 back to 1790 gives lots of interesting information- who lived in the house, who the neighbors were, jobs, ages, literacy.
Start gathering those family facts so you can participate at the next gathering with new stories about kin.

Finding a Deal
Biggest shopping day of the year. Yesterdays papers were crammed with sales flyers (well the papers have been crammed with sales flyers for a week.....).
Where can you go to find out about a particular product? The magazine, Consumer Reports, has built a reputation as a reliable authority for product testing but you haven't saved all those issues in a neat stack.
The library doesn't open till after the shopping malls.
Where can you find out if that particular widget is the best widget to buy?
Yes, GALILEO!
Select EbscoHost (Academic Search Premier (at EbscoHost)
.....Select the Publication button (sort of in the middle of the screen)
.........Search for Consumer Reports
............Click on Consumer Reports (it does have a three month delay so you need to keep the last three months of the print issues)
...............Then you can "Search within this publication" (the link is toward the right of center)
Voila! Information about the widget you desire. Notice that you can set a Journal Alert and EbscoHost will e-mail you the latest entry for your search!

Cheers, laughter, marching bands, more cheers - did you miss what the commentator said about that float? What was that quip made during the newscast? LexisNexis carries transcripts of radio and television broadcasts. It takes about 4 hours for the transcript to appear.

Feeling ones age
How old are you? Mentally, physically, spiritually, socially, chronologically? Regularly someone is quoted as saying "I only feel...." and of course it's many years younger than their chronological age.
Dr. Andrew Weil has written a book titled "Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to Your Physical and Spiritual Well Being". Chapter 9, Body II: The Anti-Inflammatory Diet refers to the science of nutrition and notes articles in Medical Journals.
Yes, I'm going to send you to GALILEO to look for articles on nutrition. You know where to go- start with EbscoHost, then try ProQuest. You can look for medical publications in both databases and limit your searches to those publications!

Bring one, take one
The long weekend coming up might offer time to read for fun. We don't purchase popular fiction for our collection. We exist to support the programs at NMTC. Yet, some of our patrons do like to read for fun....we have set up a cart with paperbacks for trading. Bring one in and take one out. It's run on the honor system. It looks like we have more paperbacks than when we started! If you're looking to trade in some older paperbacks and take away something new to read...come on by Room 103.
