The Library will be open next week (regular hours) as Georgia Highlands returns from their Spring break.

Go Hort!
Students and faculty in the Environmental Horticulture program have left for Utah to participate in the annual competition for Horticulture programs!
NMTC has done very well against the "big boys". Our students are well prepared to tackle all parts of a landscaping project from design development to installation.

Spring break begins today for NMTC students.

Library hours
We noticed that both North Metro and Georgia Highlands (we share the library) have overlapping Spring Break for the next few days. The library will close tonight and tomorrow (Wednesday March 22 and Thursday March 23) at 5PM. We will be closed on Saturday.
Back to regular hours on Monday when Georgia Highlands comes back for the rest of their semester.

Spring is in the air
Nature is painting the earth with a wide brush of color. Daffodils are almost finished, Red buds are beginning, Cherry trees are bursting forth, all abloom after the monochrome winter.

Getting ready for St. Paddy's Day!
If you're wondering how many Americans claim Irish heritage...where would you look for a number?
In GALILEO there is a link to Census Data at "The U.S. Census Bureau which offers the most comprehensive demographic data for the United States. The site includes information and statistics on the nation's population, housing, business and manufacturing activity, international trade, farming, and state and local governments." In their search box I typed Irish and lo and behold there is a frequently asked questions link to St. Patrick's Day and the Irish!

Beware the Ides
I used Google to find information on the Ides of March. It quickly offered me InfoPlease (the first site among 7,250,000 others) where I read all about the middle of the month and Julius Caeser and Shakespeare.
I did then search through GALILEO. I looked at Encyclopedia Britannica, Funk & Wagnalls, Searchasaurus, Oxford English Dictionary.
Google gave me the quickest response for this bit of fact finding.
Knowing what to use as the best resource for finding information is the key to information literacy.

Breakfast in the morning!
Nutritionists tell us that "breakfast is the most important meal of the day"! To help everyone at North Metro get off to a good start.....Chick-Fil-A from Woodstock is selling breakfast chicken biscuits for $2.00 from 8:30 till they run out! They are in the lobby right outside the library in the 100 building!

7 months
Diaries are important. They document from a single persons perspective what was happening in the world around them. "The Samuel Hugh Hawkins Diary, January - July 1877, donated by Georgia State Senator George Hooks to the Lake Blackshear Regional Library System, chronicles Americus, Georgia entrepreneur, lawyer, and banker Samuel Hawkins' financial, agricultural, civic, and religious activities in Sumter County during the final months of Reconstruction. Diary entries briefly illustrate Hawkins' work at the Bank of Americus and his real estate interests in the county. Having an interest in agriculture and horticulture, Hawkins describes his participation in the Sumter County Agricultural Society and Horticulture Society, attendance at the 1877 Georgia State Agricultural Society meeting in Milledgeville, entrepreneurial interest in the Bell Cultivator, and role in the founding of the Americus Fair Association. While later known for his role as president of the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railroad Company, Hawkins mentions railroad issues only in passing. An active member of Bethel Baptist Church (later Americus Baptist Church), Hawkins records his religious observances throughout the journal. On a national level, Hawkins comments on the contested presidential election of 1876 and the resulting presidency of Republican candidate, Rutherford B. Hayes. Locally, he chronicles city and county elections and appointments to the constitutional convention, the efforts of an emigrant agent to lure local African Americans to Louisiana as contract laborers as well as events surrounding the murder of a white woman by an African American man."

Google brings up a tsunami of web sites. It can be overwhelming to select just the right internet source.

Gold Rush season
Gold Rush days in Dahlonega are held the third weekend of October (Oct 21-22, 2006). Lots of lovely Autumn color. Spring is another gorgeous time to head for the hills.
Before you head out for an educational day trip check out the Digital Library of Georgia's "Thar's Gold in Them Thar Hills": Gold and Gold Mining in Georgia, 1830s-1940s consists of selected legal, financial, and promotional documents as well as photographs and picture postcards that represent episodes of renewed interest in gold mining in Lumpkin County during Reconstruction, at the turn of the century, and during the Depression. Culled from three archival collections at the Lumpkin County Library of the Chestatee Regional Library System, the selected textual materials cover the late 1830s through the early 1940s, but focus primarily on the period between Reconstruction and the turn of the twentieth century. By contrast, the photographs and postcards depict mining methods employed from the 1900s through the 1940s along the Chestatee River, at the Findley Mill, and at the Lockhart Mine. Correspondence to Dahlonega attorney Weir Boyd documents the activities of the Rider Mine (1868-1883), the Yahoola and Cane Creek Hydraulic Mining Company (1868-1883), the Consolidated Mines (1879-1882), and the Phoenix Gold Mining company (1891-1892). In-depth descriptions of mining operations and techniques are found within the prospectuses of the Dahlonega Consolidated Gold Mining Company, the Dahlonega Gold Mining and Milling Company, and the Findley Gold Mining Company of Georgia. In addition, Memoranda of deposit from 1838 to 1905 document the Branch Mints in Dahlonega and Charlotte

Current events- now!
Someone in the house must have a current event article - right now!
Monday morning and the Social Studies teacher said everyone had to bring in a current event article. The family is trying to get out the door - where does one get a current event article - right now?

Book Fair delight
The cases for the Scholastic Book Fair were delivered this morning!
Oh boy!
Monday we set up and start selling books from8:30AM to 6PM, Monday through Thursday.
The money we raise is for the Early Childhood Education program.
The books we earn supplement the Children's collection (used by all but selected for the Early Childhood Education Literature class).
