Why do we do that?

Have you wondered why people do the things they do? We are curious about each others habits. The professional sociologist studies human behavior and comes up with theories (the rest of us just gossip).

Check out the Sociological Collection (through GALILEO) for the theories.

Sociological Collection is an Ebsco database with more than 475 full-text titles. It provides information on all areas of sociology, including social behavior, human tendencies, interaction, relationships, community development, culture and social structure.

Your Georgia librarian can provide you with the current password to use GALILEO at home.

Spring flowers

Horticulture has flowers for sale - If you haven’t planted your spring flowers…the horticulture program has some impatiens and zinnias for sale in the greenhouse (500 building near the interstate). They both are mixed colors and are $9.00 per flat. There are 18 plants per flat. We also have some begonias that aren’t quite as far along and will be ready in about two weeks.

Celebrate May 5th by going to a Comic Book store and getting a free comic book.

Yes, there are other celebrations taking place on May 5th- Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby!

You can pick up something to read between those other celebrations. Visit the Comic Book store nearest you.

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, in partnership with Target Stores and in cooperation with affiliate state centers for the book, invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to enter Letters About Literature, a national reading-writing contest.

The Library of Congress has announced the State winners for the Letters about Literature!

This is a delightful opportunity to see how creative the students in Georgia really are!

When Google overwhelms

Sometimes using Google is like trying to drink from a fire hydrant. Too much information comes pouring out. There are portals that help narrow the search to sites that have been vetted by a person for a specific audience. Kids Click and SKS Web Select are two portals on GALILEO that limit web sites to those that are "real".

Going through Kids Click to Literature and then selecting poetry- there are 18 links to poetry sites - the reading level is noted.

To use GALILEO at home you'll need to get the current password from your Georgia librarian.

Not too light

You think a children's resource might be too easy, too light for your research?

Try Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia. It's an Ebsco product. The search screen is colorful. You are offered choices for limiting your search.

There is a Teachers link which takes you to a search page that has a very similar look to the standard Ebsco search pages - but it's a bit friendlier.

Instead of a publications tab there is a Title Lists link (took me a few minutes to figure out that was where to go to find the publications used in the database).

Funk and Wagnalls turns into Searchasaurus and it does search Academic Search Premier - and it looks "easier".

You'll need the password to access GALILEO at home. Your Georgia librarian can give you the current password.
