Joseph J. Singleton comes to Dahlonega in the 1830s. He helps a free African American named James Boisclair to buy a mine lot, which Boisclair works successfully. The mine becomes known as the "Free Jim Mine." With the proceeds, Boisclair establishes the largest general merchandise store in town and a bar room.

The LION roars

Literature Online is a fully searchable library of more than 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama and prose, 194 full-text literature journals, and other key criticism and reference resources.

LION is available through GALILEO. One might think an English and American literary database would consist of one ethnicity but LION has a solid grasp of African American literature.

Callaloo: a journal of African-American and African arts and letters (Univ. of Virginia, Charlottesville) (Baltimore, MD) is used extensively.

The results are in!

Every year GALILEO invites users to participate in an online survey that includes questions about the content and functionality of the GALILEO site and asks for suggestions for improvement.

The 2006 survey was conducted November 7-13 and was completed by 1332 respondents.

Augusta frozen in time

Robert E. Williams Photographic Collection: African-Americans in the Augusta, Ga. Vicinity (Richmond Co.) consists of 86 Glass plate negatives and positive prints of African-Americans in the Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia area.

Robert E. Williams, an African-American photographer, operated a studio, R. Williams and Son, in Augusta, Georgia, from 1888 until around 1908.

The photographs depict dwellings and domestic chores, rituals of baptism, harvesting and transporting cotton, vehicles and transportation, and children and family life.

84 of the images are presented online, as two of the negatives are copies.

This database of primary sources is not just about the Native Americans.Do a search on African American. Letters to and from and about are included!

Southeastern Native American Documents, 1730-1842, contains approximately 2,000 documents and images relating to the Native American population of the Southeastern United States from the collections of the University of Georgia Libraries, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville Library, the Frank H. McClung Museum, the Tennessee State Library and Archives, the Tennessee State Museum, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, and the LaFayette-Walker County Library. The documents are comprised of letters, legal proceedings, military orders, financial papers, and archaeological images relating to Native Americans in the Southeast.

Free at last

From Slave to Statesman: The Legacy of Joshua Houston, Servant to Sam Houston (F 391 H79 P 73 1993) by Patricia Smith Prather and Jane Clements Monday tells the story of a black man who never forgot his roots in slavery as he helped bring up the black community.

Joshua Houston was taught to read by his owner.
Joshua Houston was trusted to make business decisions while his owner was away.
Joshua Houston was allowed to keep the money he earned.
Joshua Houston was freed by his master in 1862- the year Abraham Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation.
Joshua Houston valued his education and the trade he had been taught (blacksmithing).

Read about this remarkable man and the contributions he and his family made to the South. They valued education above all. An education and a trade would truly free a person from manual labor.

Georgia Day celebrates the founding of the colony of Georgia in Savannah, 1733!

Where did they go?

Vanishing Georgia (found in GALILEO and TheDigital Library of Georgia) comprises nearly 18,000 photographs. Ranging from daguerreotypes to Kodachrome prints, the images span over 100 years of Georgia history.

The broad subject matter of these photographs, shot by both amateurs and professionals, includes, but is not limited to, family and business life, street scenes and architecture, agriculture, school and civic activities, important individuals and events in Georgia history, and landscapes.

The wide variety of the collected visual images results from efforts by archivists from the Georgia Division of Archives and History who sought, between 1975 and 1996, to preserve Georgia's endangered historical photographs.

Designed primarily for preservation, the project located, selected, and copied historically significant photographs held by individuals who wanted to share their pieces of the past with future generations.

The Georgia Archives joins with the Digital Library of Georgia to present the Vanishing Georgia images as a digital resource. Support for the project is provided by a Library Services and Technology Act grant administered through Georgia HomePLACE

Do a search using the term African-American. 97 pictures are retrieved.

In GALILEO check the "Baldy Editorial Cartoons, 1946-1982, 1997: The Clifford H. Baldowski Collection at the Richard B. Russell Library contains 6,740 pen and ink drawings and 2,460 velox. The digital database opens with approximately 2,500 cartoons from the collection. Clifford H. Baldowski, known by the pen-name "Baldy," depicted the local, national, and international news of his day in the editorial pages of the Augusta Chronicle, Miami Herald, and Atlanta Constitution. His work is a rich source for those studying political reorganization in Georgia and the growth of Atlanta as well as the Civil Rights Movement, the Cold War, the Vietnam conflict, Middle East tensions, and Watergate."

Doing a search using the terms black or civil rights will bring up cartoons that made folks think when they were first published. These cartoons will still make the reader think.

Alonzo Herndon

Carole Merritt wrote the first biography of the Herndon family, The Herndons: An Atlanta Family (F294 .A853 H476 2002). Who were they? Why should a biography have been written about them?

Are you familiar with Atlanta Life Insurance? This company was founded by Alonzo Herndon in 1905, just 40 years after his emancipation from slavery. Obviously the company has prospered in the 102 years of its existence.

Be inspired by the Herndons, an Atlanta family.

Connecticut pictures?

This has nothing to do with Georgia but does tie nicely with yesterdays post about what to do with your pictures:


KILLINGLY [Connecticut]— The Killingly Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc. will publish a second pictorial history of the Town of Killingly. The book will cover the mills, schools, churches, cemeteries, buildings, businesses, and people at work and play.

The society needs photographs to use in the publication and would like to borrow your pictures. The pictures will be returned after copies are made for the book. The group will accept photos through Saturday, March 10.

The Killingly Historical Center at 196 Main St. in Danielson will open from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 13 to drop off photos:
The historical center will also be open during regular hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays.

An Advanced Search for African American and electronic books in our library catalog turned up over 100 items.

Limiting the search to African American and speech and electronic books found 6 items.

The one that intrigued me was Lift every voice[computer file] : African American oratory, 1787-1900 / edited by Philip S. Foner and Robert James Branham. The speeches begin in 1787.

We have over 40,000 titles in NetLibrary.
There are three ways to get to netLibrary:
1. Through the NMTC catalog, limiting the advanced search to EBK
2. Through GALILEO , use the find a database box, typing in NetLibrary
3. Going to NetLibrary online

In GALILEO you'll find the Auburn Avenue Research Library Finding Aids database which consists of guides to archival and manuscript collections held by the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African-American Culture and History, a special library of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System.

Social bookmarking is a relatively new phenomenon.

The "social" part is we get to see how many others have marked that web link. In a del.icio.us account, if you click on the "saved by others" you can see who else saved the site. You click on their link to see what else they have saved. If I like A and you like A, maybe I'll like your Z!

It's a way to share information. Two technical colleges in Georgia have del.icio.us accounts. Check out North Metro Tech and Savannah Tech. We're collecting web links that will help our students succeed.

Number crunching

Reports, projects, and presentations all look "better" with graphs and charts.

World Data Analyst includes current and historical statistics on 217 countries of the world. Highlights of the database include the following:

----Country Snapshots--maps and statistics
----Country Comparisons--create tables and graphs comparing countries using recent and historical statistics
----Ranked Statistics--compare economic or population measures or significant geographic features

Users can use tools in the database to create tables and charts and export the information to a spreadsheet for data crunching and deeper analysis.

Beauty in Stone

Talked earlier about how a picture is worth a thousand words and how you can find videos in the NMTC catalog. Two movies in GALILEO (The Digital Library of Georgia) tell volumes about Georgia workers and the marble industry. Watching the short films is a lesson in the changes that have been made in video presentations!

"The online collection consists of two short industrial films made by the Georgia Marble Company in the 1950s-1960s that document the company's history, operations, skilled laborers and craftspeople, and the widespread use of their marble, limestone and serpentine products.

Georgia Marble Company's use of the industrial film medium served to promote its products by capturing in live action the skill and industry required to create "beauty in stone."

The first film, New Face on Capitol Hill, depicts Georgia Marble Company's role in the reconstruction of the east façade of the U.S. Capitol building prior to John F. Kennedy's inauguration, and includes footage of president John F. Kennedy at his 1961 inauguration, the former vice president Richard M. Nixon, and Architect of the Capitol J. George Stewart.

The second film, Producing America's Buried Treasures, focuses more closely on the company's overall history, its quarrying and finishing facilities in Georgia, Tennessee and Vermont, the breadth of applications for Georgia marble products and related limestone and serpentine industries in Alabama and Virginia. Unique to this film are its highlights of uses for processed marble in products that include roofing material, and turf marking for athletic fields.

Both Producing America's Buried Treasure and the New Face on Capitol Hill feature the company's marble quarrying and finishing operations in Pickens County, Georgia; both include pictorial examples of marble-quarrying and marble-shaping machinery, of stone cutters working in the quarry, and of craftsmen sculpting the marble.

Many beautiful high-quality products were produced by the Georgia Marble Company, and a number of well-known structures comprised of Georgia marble are interspersed throughout both films. Most notable are the statue Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial, and the façade of the U.S. Capitol Building, the centerpiece of New Face on Capitol Hill. "

Calling cards

In the "olden days" ladies and gentlemen left calling cards to document that they had visited a home.

Today we pass out business cards to help others remember us after a networking opportunity. One can purchase kits at office supply stores to create a business card using the computer and printer.

What do you put on your business card? How do you make it positively memorable? We have several Best of Business Card Design (NE 965.2...) books to give you examples of the best!

What is a picture worth?

The saying goes - "a picture is worth a thousand words". Have you ever tried to describe an emotion or an action? You keep talking but if you could show a picture or better yet a video- you would have no trouble saying - "that's it!"

We have hundreds of videos to illustrate our programs.

Safe conversation

One can always discuss the weather. If you'd like to see what is happening across the country - look at the NOAA site National Weather Service Enhanced Radar Image Loop . Facinating to see the whole country.

Notice how the cursor turns to a hand over a state and the info box tells you the local radar location. Click and you see that area!

This site has been added to the web sites collected for NMTC programs for Horticulture. EHO students need to know the weather for their program. Check out the other weather site for EHO. Soil temperature!

Have to keep it

We've only had this database for a year. It isn't getting widespread use. I thought we might cancel it but I want to give it another year.

There is a monthly report sent with statistics on use of Garden Literature Index. The index is noted on the student survey at the end of each class (for every program not just horticulture). Folks are using the database - just not enough folks.

There are tons of articles in Garden Literature Index. They are helpful for every type of gardener not just the pros!

• It does have full text articles. You can limit your search by clicking on full text.
• It does not have a link to see what publications are used. You can figure that out by doing a search and scrolling through the articles pulled up.

The real thing

Researchers thrive on primary resources - the original document and not some interpretation or synopsis or.....but the real thing! Most of us can't get to the primary sources. GALILEO offers us a chance to read the original document.

Annals of American History Online includes the full text of over 2000 primary documents in American history, including historical accounts, speeches, memoirs, poems, editorials, landmark court decisions, and cultural criticism. The resource also has multimedia files, including more than 500 pictures and hundreds of video and audio clips of famous speeches. This chronicle may be explored year by year using a timeline dating from 1493 to 2002, browsed by author or topic, or searched by keyword.

I will admit to some frustration with this database. I'm trying to find primary sources for Martin Luther King - for the celebration on Monday.

• He's not listed by author.
• I didn't find him under Civil Rights leaders.
• I searched under the time period 1961-1968: The Burdens of World power- limited to multimedia and scrolling way down the list found a video clip Civil Rights Leaders: Martin Luther King

It's not intuitive and the search boxes I'm using aren't pulling up what I'm sure must be in there..... if you have any tips on using this database- please share. It looks like it should be chock full of great information but getting it seems to be a problem.

Habla Espanol

There are resources available in GALILEO for those who read in Spanish or would like to practice their Spanish.

One resource is "Enciclopedia Universal en Español database includes more than 47,000 articles and 8,300 photographs and images. The resource also includes a Spanish-language dictionary with more than 65,000 entries. Most articles are brief or of moderate length and discuss people, places, institutions, things, or concepts. Longer articles are divided into separate sections for easier access and more accurate searching. Special features include an atlas that focuses on world countries, maps, and statistics; major world cities; and distribution of languages & religions and also a timelines that outline general history plus art and cultural history. "

When you type spanish in the Find a Database box - 6 specific sources will show up.

Narrowing the field

GALILEO offers so much information. It seems hard to narrow down what you're looking for to a manageable level.

In ProQuest, there is a subset database "Career & Technical Education (a ProQuest database) which contains over 400 titles, all in full text and many in full image, which contain the charts, diagrams, graphs, tables, photos, and other graphics originally published with the text. Subjects include automobile, electronic, and computer technology; the building trades; graphic arts; medicine, nursing, and pharmacy; child care; food service and hotel management; office skills; veterinary technology; retail work; public safety; and other practical studies. "

Beluga Whales

Gaspar, the beluga whale at the Georgia Aquarium, died this week. A Google search turns up information about Gaspar and beluga whales.

You can search the Encyclopedia of Animals by Ebsco in GALILEO for text information. They don't have pictures of beluga whales.

Sea World offers an interesting site of Beluga whales with a list of references and a list of books for young children.

Wikipedia has Beluga Whale information with pictures.

One source doesn't have everything you need. Research means looking again and again. Check the authority of the information.

If you know nothing about a topic using the Encyclopedia is one way to build your foundation of knowledge. Then when you skip through Google if you already know a little bit you won't get tripped up by scam web sites.

Where are we going?

Three times today we'll be orienting students to NMTC. Oxford English Dictionary (in GALILEO) notes for its second definition b. trans. By extension: to position or align (a structure, etc.) with, or in a particular way relative to, the points of the compass, or other specified points; (also occas.) to determine the bearings or relative position of. Also with to, toward, with.

We'll be pointing students in the way they should go to be successful in their program.

Clearing space

Our storage space is limited. We keep two years of periodicals. We're discarding the 2004 issues to make space on the shelves. Faculty have been notified that the magazines are available. The magazines are on two tables in the library for folks (faculty, staff and students) to take away. The remainders will be recycled Friday morning.

The end is nigh

Yes, the Fall quarter ends this Saturday. Exams are being given. Final papers are being turned in.

The library is humming with inventory. We are discovering old friends. Right now the Librarian is amidst the "PR's" (which is literature). Lovely to scan through the Victorian classics. Touched A Christmas Carol by Dickens and thought about the modern interpretations we see on the Big Screen.

World Data Analyst from Encyclopædia Britannica includes current and historical statistics on 217 countries of the world. The resource includes tools for comparing and ranking data and creating tables that can be exported into spreadsheets.

It is fun- the database allows you to create tables and charts- with bar graphs! This will be super for country reports.

Browsing through the print edition can be a series of "ah ha" moments. We have several older copies of The World Almanac (AY 67 .N5 W7) available for borrowing.

Numbers count

The monthly report with statistics, from what program areas use the computers to how many reference questions have been asked, is being compiled. These numbers help the librarians assess how to provide the best library services.

ACTE - The Association for Career and Technical Education is the largest national education association dedicated to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for careers.

ACTE is meeting in Atlanta for their annual conference. A wonderful opportunity for Technical Educators from around the country to meet, greet, and learn!

It's getting to the end of the quarter. Students are beginning to panic about writing that paper.

Who has the manuscript?

Looking for unique information can be very difficult. Google will pull up popular, common information but what about that special manuscript or primary document, how do you find it?

From GALILEO notes -

ArchivesUSA is a unique database for scholars and researchers who use primary source materials. It provides location information for primary source materials. The database integrates three major information resources:

Resource 1: A newly compiled directory of manuscript repositories, giving full addresses, including e-mail and URLs, opening hours, and details of holdings and areas of special interest. This directory updates and supersedes the Directory of Archives and Manuscript Repositories in the United States (DAMRUS) last published in 1988.

Resource 2: Collection records from the National Union Catalogue of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC). Information gathered and compiled by the Library of Congress from the 1950s through the end of 1997, covering some 76,000 collections. Each record also includes the LC's subject and name indexing of the collection.

Resource 3: Names and detailed subject indexing of over 44,000 collections whose finding aids have been published separately in the major microfiche series, National Inventory of Documentary Sources in the United States (NIDS).

The NUCMC and NIDS information has been integrated to provide a single record for each collection, with detailed information drawn from both resources when available. The first installment of a growing body of collection records submitted directly to ArchivesUSA has also been included.

The full text manuscript is not in the database but the location of the information is noted. We can borrow materials through InterLibrary Loan. Most institutions will copy and fax articles up to a certain page length.

Some classes require a Pro & Con "hot" topic to be researched. The GALILEO description for SKS WebSelect notes - that SKS is an online database of Internet resources providing access to quality Web sites on almost any subject. WebSelect is continually updated to include new sites and dynamically changing data. Summaries provide a concise overview of site content and authority. Keyword, Subject Heading, and Topic Browse searches can be performed. Topics are assigned based on site content and mission. WebSelect is dynamically updated and offers Internet resources from around the globe, including those of leading universities, government agencies and respected organizations.

What is very helpful for researchers - on the right side of the SKS home page is "Your Top Ten Pro vs Con: Leading Issues". Click on the icon for the topic and voila- an overview, articles, links, resources!

GALILEO offers this Ebsco database - The Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection which is a database with more than 470 full-text journals. It covers topics in emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods.

Search for Holiday dinner and read a wonderous story of An Unforgettable Christmas Dinner., By: Petrie, Phil, Essence, 00140880, Dec2002, Vol. 33, Issue 8. It brought tears to my eyes.

Postcards tell our friends what we're doing on vacation- maybe not in what we write but in the picture on the postcard.

GALILEO notes tell us that the database "Picturing Augusta: Historic Postcards from the Collection of the East Central Georgia Regional Library System consists of forty turn-of-the-twentieth century Augusta-related picture postcards selected from the collection Augusta and Environs: Picture Post Cards in Color held at the East Central Georgia Regional Library in Augusta, Georgia. The postcards in this collection depict the commercial development, economic prosperity, and social customs of Augusta and its inhabitants during the opening years of the twentieth century. Furthermore, the picture postcards document the interplay between Augusta, Georgia, North Augusta, South Carolina, and Summerville, Georgia before and immediately following Summerville's incorporation into the city of Augusta in 1912. The postcards, as collected by Augusta resident Ella C. Mayo Belz at the turn of the twentieth century through 1914, include images of notable Augusta landmarks such as the Augusta Canal, Augusta Country Club, Bon Air Hotel, Lake Olmstead, Meadow Garden (home of the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence, George Walton), Medical College of Georgia, and the Partridge Inn. Several postcards in the online collection relate specifically to Augusta's position as the second largest inland cotton market in the United States. These postcards show cotton fields, harvested bales, mills, and other scenes of production associated with the cotton industry in Augusta. There are also many scenic postcards that depict views along the Savannah River and the commercial and residential streetscapes along both Broad and Greene Streets. "

Weather junkies love to read about weather happenings. Horticulture students are frequently weather junkies.

We've added 28 web sites for Horticulture to our "Web sites collected for NMTC programs" link in GALILEO.

Among those 28 sites is:

The Georgia Automated Environmental Monitoring Network which "was established in 1991 by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the University of Georgia. The objective of the AEMN is to collect reliable weather information for agricultural and environmental applications. Each station monitors air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, solar radiation, wind speed, wind direction, soil temperature at 2, 4, and 8 inch depths, atmospheric pressure, and soil moisture every 1 second. Data are summarized at 15 minute intervals and at midnight a daily summary is calculated. A microcomputer at the Georgia Experiment Station initiates telephone calls to each station periodically and downloads the recorded data. The data are processed immediately and disseminated via the world wide web ( www.Georgiaweather.net)"

What a treat for weather junkies. Graphs, charts, soil temperature, soil moisture - yesterdays conditions, today's conditions, 31 day summary. A treasure trove of information. You type in your zip code and there is all this data to peruse. A great rainy day place to surf.

More than a sales weekend

Veterans Day is more than the first sale of the holiday season. In our collection we have 51 titles when I searched for "veterans". Most of the titles can be read on-line in netLibrary.

One special book can be found in our Early Childhood collection at PZ 7. B91527 WAL 1990 written by Eve Bunting,The wall, illustrated by Ronald Himler. A boy and his father come from far away to visit the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington and find the name of the boy's grandfather, who was killed in the conflict.

Remember those who fought and gave their all.
Remember those who served and came home.
Remember each service person.

Native American Month

November is the month set aside to honor Native Americans. The Pilgrims wouldn't have made it without the help of the locals.

In GALILEO there is a database titled Native American Documents.

"This database contains approximately 2,000 documents and images relating to the Native American population of the Southeastern United States from the collections of the University of Georgia Libraries, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville Library, the Frank H. McClung Museum, the Tennessee State Library and Archives, the Tennessee State Museum and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian. We remember

Many Christians celebrate All Saints Day on November 1 and All Souls Day on November 2. They are days to remember those who have gone ahead.

Using the Religion and Philosophy Database (EbscoHost) in GALILEO, searching for "All Souls Day" brings up 16 articles. Most of the articles reflect on what the day means to the author.

Dem Bones, Dem Bones, Dem Bones

It's Halloween and skeletons are a must have decoration. What are those bones called?

Try the E-Skeleton Project.

"The eSkeletons Project website is devoted to the study of human and primate comparative anatomy. It offers a unique set of digitized versions of skeletons in 2-D and 3-D in full color, animations, and much supplemental information. The user can navigate through the various regions of the skeleton and view all orientations of each element along with muscle and joint information. eSkeletons enables you to view the bones of both human and non-human primates ranging from the gorilla to the tiny mouse lemur."

There is a link called Find It which will show you the libraries in Georgia that own the periodical. You can search in the Georgia Libraries Journals List (GOLD) to discover the library that has the periodical. Your librarian can borrow the article through InterLibrary Loan.

Travel guides can be a great way to arm-chair travel. Travel guides can give you an idea of what to do when you get to your location.

NetLibrary has a collection of 31, Hunter Travel Guides. The guides range in date from 1998 to 2005.

Guess who's coming to dinner?

Are you beginning to think about holiday gatherings? While the family is gathered, ask questions and start to gather the names and dates that build a family tree. Best of all, tape record the stories being told around the table or in the kitchen or on the porch. The stories tell more about the family than the names and dates.

Once you have a few names and dates you can use Ancestry.com on campus to look up more names and dates! If you use your public library GALILEO password, you can access Heritage Quest from home. Heritage Quest is similar to Ancestry.com- but not the same.

Stocking stuffers

Halloween hasn't happened yet but stores have Christmas treats out to tempt you to spend ahead on the holiday season. If your loved one has everything and you'd like to get something that doesn't have to be dusted...some "money folks" suggest buying a single share of stock as a gift.

To find out about a company, you can search in Hoover's Company Records in GALILEO . The link leads you to Proquest so you aren't in the Hoover's you might be familiar with. The information is concise and readable.

I searched for bicycles- if I was giving a gift of stock, I might choose a stock that related to my recipients hobbies. 65 companies came up with the search term bicycles. Many are private companies so I couldn't buy stock. If it is a public company, the ticker symbol is included in the brief description.

"Hoover's Company Capsules & Profiles includes brief information on 15,000 companies, including an overview of company operations, addresses, phone and fax numbers, names of key officers, a list of top competitors, sales and employment figures, and stock symbols.

Direct access to Hoover's Company Capsules and Profiles can be found within full-text articles in ABI Inform Complete and ABI Inform Dateline. Links are indicated with an information icon followed by a company name."

On line video instruction

Do you learn best by seeing and hearing the instruction?

Chattahoochee Technical College is creating online video instruction for using GALILEO. Their first module teaches about the Quick Search function:

Autumnal delights

The colors in north west Georgia are magnificent. Bright reds, yellows, and oranges with burgundy thrown in for delight! It almost looks like a New England fall when you drive up the mountain roads.

Last year I took you to Access Science @ McGraw Hill to look for information about photosynthesis and autumn color.

This year lets do a Quick Search using the term Fall Leaves and limit our search to Science and Technology.

Amazing.

The articles float down to us like the falling leaves.

The first article in Health Source : Consumer Edition has a complete description of the physiology involved in leaves turning red. Scrolling down shows articles about gas prices and leaf watchers from USA Today.

Fun to see what comes up in a Quick Search.

What to do with all those apples

Autumn festivals abound especially apple festivals in North Georgia. What does one do with the abundance of fruit?

Flying time

Spent Thursday learning about creating a culture of innovation. Heard interesting ways to tie the library and research together.

Databases offer students 24/7 access to resources needed to build their knowledge base. GALILEO at NMTC offers over a 100 databases.

Charitable Giving

Listening to NPR this morning as they asked for donations, made me think about Foundations and charitable giving. How do you find out what charities are "real"?

In GALILEO you can go to

"lists all organizations or individuals licensed for business by the Georgia Secretary of State. Information provided for each license holder includes: address, chief executive officer, secretary, and chief financial officer"

I typed in Foundation and 7680 records came up.

When you're looking for something to read and it's too yucky to go outside....we have 44,000 books in netLibrary that you can select from!

I started with romance as the keyword search.
Nothing came up that looked like a fiction title.
netLibrary suggested the Topic American fiction in English
I selected that and over 1400 fiction titles came up!
netLibrary also suggested English fiction as a topic.

I don't have to go out in the rain to find a good story to read.

Cooling down

It's getting cooler, Autumn really is here. The leaves are turning orange, red and yellow. Not the vibrant colors one sees in pictures from the North East but still colorful enough. Which brings me to Horticulture.

HORT 100 learned about the resources available to them through GALILEO. They said- if only we'd know about these resources for our first project. Now they know for their second project.

Web sites suggested by the students and faculty in EHO (Environmental Horticulture program) have been added to GALILEO and to the NMTC_Librarian del.icio.us link.
